Do you know your ABCDE to Skin?
Welcome to another edition of the Vysana Life newsletter! I’m Dr. Sunny Dhesi, and today, we’re discussing a crucial method for monitoring your skin: the ABCDE approach to identifying potential skin cancer. As we enjoy more sunshine, it’s important to stay vigilant about skin health. Let’s delve into the ABCDE method, which helps you recognise concerning changes in your skin.

What is the ABCDE to Skin Approach?
A = Asymmetry
A normal mole is usually symmetrical. If you draw a line through the middle, both halves should match. If you notice one side of a mole is larger or oddly shaped, it’s a sign to get it checked. Asymmetry is a red flag that something might be wrong.
B = Borders
Look at the edges of your mole. Healthy moles have smooth, even borders. If the borders are irregular, jagged, or blurred, it’s time to seek professional advice. Changes in the border can indicate malignancy.
C = Colour
A mole should be a uniform color. If you observe multiple colors, shades, or uneven pigmentation, it could be a cause for concern. Look for moles that have different hues, such as shades of brown, black, blue, white, or red.
D = Diameter
Size matters when it comes to moles. If a mole is larger than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser), it’s advisable to get it evaluated. However, some melanomas can be smaller, so size alone isn’t the only indicator.
E = Evolving
Perhaps the most important factor is change. If you notice a mole changing in size, shape, color, or elevation, or if it starts itching, bleeding, or crusting, it’s crucial to consult a healthcare professional immediately. Evolution is a significant warning sign.
Tools Used in Clinic
Dermatoscope
In the clinic, we use a dermatoscope, a magnifying tool that provides a detailed view of the skin. This device helps us see the asymmetry, borders, color variations, and other characteristics of moles more clearly. It’s a vital tool in skin cancer detection.
Map My Mole Service
For a thorough check, we offer a “Map My Mole” service. This involves taking detailed images of suspicious moles using a special lens attached to a phone. The images are then sent to a dermatologist for analysis. This service provides quick feedback and peace of mind.
Professional Advice
If you notice any changes based on the ABCDE approach, seek professional advice immediately. Early detection and treatment are crucial for effective management of skin cancer. Your GP or dermatologist can provide a thorough evaluation and recommend the best course of action.
Staying Vigilant
Regularly checking your skin is vital, especially as we spend more time outdoors. Make it a habit to examine your skin, and ask a partner to help with areas you can’t easily see, like your back. Early detection saves lives, so don’t hesitate to seek help if you notice any changes.
Importance of Sunscreen
Preventing skin cancer starts with protecting your skin. Always apply sunscreen before going out, especially during peak sunlight hours. Reapply every two hours, and more often if you’re swimming or sweating. Prevention is always better than cure.
Conclusion
Monitoring your skin with the ABCDE approach is a simple yet powerful tool for early detection of skin cancer. If you have any concerns, reach out to us or your healthcare provider. Stay vigilant, protect your skin, and enjoy the sunshine responsibly.
