Hello and welcome to another edition of the Vysana weekly newsletter. As we mark the International Menopause Awareness Day, I felt it was essential to delve deep into a topic that’s close to many of our hearts – quite literally. Today, we’re discussing the intricate relationship between menopause, perimenopause, and cardiovascular health.
The Startling Reality of Cardiovascular Health Post-Menopause
Statistics reveal a concerning trend: postmenopausal women face a higher risk of cardiovascular disease compared to men of the same age. This shift is primarily attributed to the decline in oestrogen levels. Oestrogen, a vital hormone, plays a pivotal role in maintaining heart health. It relaxes blood vessels, reduces inflammation, lowers bad cholesterol levels, and supports the heart’s electrical system.
The Role of High Blood Pressure
High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a silent threat that places immense stress on our heart and blood vessels. It’s a condition that tends to rise with age, affecting nearly half of adults over sixty. Several factors contribute to hypertension, including genetics, weight, lack of exercise, poor diet, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption.
Can Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) Help?
For many women, the question arises: Can HRT help safeguard heart health during menopause? The answer is multifaceted. For most women with high blood pressure, body identical HRT can be safe and might even help lower blood pressure for some. Studies indicate that starting HRT during perimenopause or within ten years of menopause can effectively reduce the risk of heart disease.
The Importance of a Heart-Healthy Lifestyle
While treatments and therapies play their part, it’s equally crucial to adopt a heart-healthy lifestyle. This includes regular blood pressure checks, staying active, eating a balanced diet, managing weight, limiting alcohol, quitting smoking, and practicing relaxation techniques like yoga and meditation.
A Glimpse into Skin Health: Nano Fractional Skin Resurfacing
Lastly, as we always emphasize skin health at Vysana, I wanted to introduce you to the wonders of nano fractional skin resurfacing. This non-invasive treatment is perfect for addressing pigmentation, sun damage, rough skin, textured skin, and fine lines. It’s a treatment I personally undergo twice a year and can vouch for its effectiveness.
