The Lowdown on CBD Oil: Can It Help with Anxiety?
ON CBD OIL:
"Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough." It's sage advice that can be applied to a whole host of problems—including mindset and anxiety. Instead of fixating on everything that's wrong in our lives, we should focus on the things that are going right. It is easy to read this type of advice but in reality it is much harder to implement. This is why we need to find tools to help manage negative feelings like anxiety. One type of tool that has been suggested in supporting a positive mindset is CBD Oil.
WHAT IS CBD OIL?
CBD oil is a non-psychoactive compound found in the cannabis plant. Unlike THC, the compound that gives users a high or euphoria, CBD oil does not produce any mind-altering effects. Instead, it's thought to offer a variety of health benefits, including reducing inflammation and pain. Some people also report that it helps with anxiety by promoting relaxation and calmness.
BUT DOES IT REALLY WORK? AND IS IT SAFE? LET'S TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT THE LOWDOWN ON CBD OIL.
HOW DOES CBD OIL WORK?
CBD oil works by interacting with the body's endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is responsible for maintaining balance in the body and regulates a variety of functions, including sleep, appetite, pain, and immune system response. When CBD oil is introduced into the body, it works to support the ECS in its efforts to maintain balance.
A 2013 study published in Neuropsychopharmacology found that CBD improved participant's ability to socialize by reducing anxiety levels. The study found that participants who received 600mg of CBD before giving a public speech reported significantly less anxiety than those who received a placebo.
Another study published in Frontiers in Pharmacology found that CBD may help reduce anxiety-related behaviours in those with conditions like PTSD and social anxiety disorder. The study found that CBD oil was able to reduce fear memories and prevented the formation of new fear memories in rats. Researchers believe that these findings could translate to humans and be used to treat PTSD and other anxiety disorders.
IS CBD OIL SAFE?
CBD oil is generally considered safe for most people when used as directed. However, there are some side effects that have been reported, including drowsiness, light headedness, dry mouth, spotting/light menstrual bleeding, changes in appetite, diarrhoea, and fatigue. If you experience any of these side effects after taking CBD oil, stop taking it immediately and consult your doctor.
CBD oil is regulated as a food supplement and the UK the Food Standards Agency does provide guidance. Food Standards Agency. There has also been some guidance on CBD from the World Health Organisation WHO Perspective. To err on the side of caution, start with a low dose and increase gradually as needed until you find relief from your symptoms. As always, consult your doctor before beginning any new supplement or treatment regimen—especially if you're pregnant or breastfeeding or taking other medications.
